British Standard (Safety Signs Guide)

Health & Safety (Safety Signs & Signals) Regulation 1996. All general health & safety signs used in the workplace must now include a pictorial symbol categorised by shape, colour & graphic image. If your existing signs already confirm to BS 5378 there is no need for change, but as a reminder and training aid we show examples of these symbols from the European Directive 92/58 EEC upon our legislation is based.


SAFE CONDITION

A green oblong or square with symbol or text in white denoting a safety sign providing information about safe conditions. B.S.5252 B.S.381C : 14E53


FIRE FIGHTING

A red oblong or square with symbol in white denoting a safety sign that indicates the location of fire fighting equipment. B.S. 5252 B.S.381C : 04E53

PROHIBITION

A red circular band with diagonal cross bar on a white background, the symbol within the circle to be black denoting a safety sign that indicates that a certain behaviour is prohibited. B.S.5252 B.S.381C : 04E53

MANDATORY

A blue circle with white symbol denoting a sign that indicates that a specific course of action must be taken. B.S.5252 B.S.381C : 18E53

WARNING

A yellow triangle with black border and symbol within the yellow area denoting a safety sign that gives warning of a hazard. B.S.5252 B.S.381C : 10E55
